Crazy Days
Things I Never Would Have Thought to Do
Things I Never Would Have Thought to Do
I'm not the most thorough housekeeper. I'm not lazy. I just never have enough time to do everything that needs to be done. I used to struggle to clean my apartment. One day my mom was visiting and asked if I needed help cleaning up. I was old enough that I was embarrassed she'd even ask.
We spent about half an hour talking about my schedule and how hard it was for me to keep my place clean. And then mom suggested I should just assign myself chores 5 days a week. Each day I clean one room or do one thing. Suddenly, my housecleaning seemed so much easier. And I spend less time cleaning up every week than I expected to. Some days I'm done in like 5 minutes!
I think everyone has these Doh! Homer Simpson moments. What do you learn from others that seems like common sense, but it hits you like a ton of bricks when you first hear about it from someone else?
Here are some cool articles I've read that made me slap my head in surprise. I should have thought of these things!
Do you have house plants? Do you drink tea? I never would have thought of this, but Nationwide Insurance says we can use our used tea bags as organic fertilizer!
I'm so sorry I never thought of that. I only have like 3 house plants but I must drink a gallon of tea every week.
Are you living in a small home and wishing you had more space to store things? You probably have more than you realize. Top Ten Topia has a list of great ideas for saving space. Okay, I'm not putting in a moving wall but I admit I haven't been using the space under the bed for anything but dust balls.
Knowing what I can store in such a small apartment empowers me. And some day when I own my own home, it will feel like a spacious castle!
If you're like me, you're probably not much of a yogurt fan. I've eaten tasty yogurts but I don't buy them very often. And it turns out the sweeter the yogurt is the less healthy it is for you. According to the Perspectist a good way to eat yogurt is to mix your own fruit in. You'll make a nice snack that isn't loaded with added sugar.
Yogurt can be a great source of protein, fat, and helpful bacteria. But it feels like I'm taking medicine. The fruit idea makes yogurt more palatable. I'm learning to adapt to the yogurt lifestle without sacrificing my principles as a stingy eater.
Soap and water are common household items. I began buying my own soap as soon as I moved out of my parents' home. I started with bar soap but mom convinced me to switch to liquid soap. It doesn't melt away when it gets wet.
Don't get me wrong. Bar soap still cleans you up when you need it to. But I always thought of soap as something that belonged in the bathroom. According to Knowicles, soap is more useful than we realize. Instead of buying expensive specialty cleaners for everything in my home, I've learned to use soap and water to do most of my basic cleaning.
I still use some specialty cleaners but I save a lot of money using a basic soap and water solution that cleans everything from carpet to counter tops.
